THE DOCTRINE OF SELF-DYNAMICS
CHAPTER-19: The Doctrine of the Seven-Layered Universe and the Seven Heavens
THE ABSOLUTE CENTER AND THE FIRST VIBRATION
To say that “in the beginning there was nothing” is an incomplete expression. For even “nothingness” is a definition, and everything defined carries a boundary. Yet before creation there was no boundary. There was neither emptiness nor fullness. Neither light nor darkness. For all opposites had not yet been born. Since the human mind always comprehends existence through opposites, it struggles to understand the beginning. The intellect can know something only by comparing it with something else. But in the primordial state there was no comparison. There was no distinction. There was no two. There was only the One.
For this reason, ancient sages used silence when describing the state before creation. Because silence was the closest symbol to truth not yet divided. Yet the silence described here is not the absence of audible sounds. It is the absolute stillness in which existence has not yet transformed into vibration. The Doctrine of Self-Dynamics calls this state “Absolute Silence.”
Absolute Silence is not a dead stillness. On the contrary, it is the unrevealed state of infinite motion. Just as an unseen forest is concealed within a seed, all universes were concealed within Absolute Silence. There were not yet stars, yet the possibility of stars existed. Time was not yet flowing, yet the seed of all times was present. Consciousness was not yet observing itself, yet all layers of consciousness existed as an unseen essence.
The human mind often imagines the beginning as emptiness. Because within the physical world, emptiness appears close to nonexistence. Yet esoteric teachings interpret emptiness not as nonexistence, but as unborn fullness. Silence here is not lack; it is infinite density. Because all unrevealed possibilities are hidden within it.
The Sufi doctrine of “Kanz-i Maḥfī,” the “Hidden Treasure,” expresses precisely this mystery. Creation emerges because the Hidden Treasure desires to be known. This expression is symbolic. For the Absolute Essence is not thought to create because it is truly lacking something. Lack gives rise to need, and need is the sign of limitation. Yet the Absolute Source is limitless. The “desire” described here is not a human-like need, but the movement of infinite consciousness making its own truth visible.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, this is the essence of creation:
the desire of consciousness to observe itself.
For consciousness produces reflection in order to see itself. Just as invisible light becomes perceptible when it strikes a surface, Absolute Consciousness also creates layers in order to experience its own infinity. Thus, the One begins to observe itself in the form of multiplicity.
The concept of “Ein Sof” in Kabbalah is another symbol of the same truth. “Ein Sof” means endlessness, infinity without limit. This infinity is not a specific being. For everything that can be defined is limited. Ein Sof fits into no form. It is neither male nor female. Neither light nor darkness. Neither inside nor outside. Because all concepts gain meaning only within the created universe.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the greatest mistake human beings make is attempting to reduce the Absolute Source into mental forms. Human beings deify their own psychology and attempt to imprison the infinite within their patterns of thought. Yet real truth can never fully fit within any thought.
For this reason, ancient mystics often preferred silence. Because words are limited, while truth is limitless.
Silence here is not ignorance; it is the highest knowledge.
For when human beings speak, they produce distinctions. In silence, however, divisions begin to dissolve. This is why the moments in which the mind becomes silent during deep meditations, dhikr states, or mystical ecstasies are important. For the first vibration of truth can only be felt when inner noise diminishes.
The Absolute Source has also sometimes been described through the symbol of “Absolute Darkness.” At a superficial level, this expression may seem frightening. Because human beings associate darkness with the unknown. Yet the darkness described here is not evil. This darkness represents the intensity that the human mind cannot yet comprehend.
Just as the eye becomes blinded when looking directly at excessively bright light, limited consciousness cannot directly comprehend infinite intensity. For this reason, mystics described the primordial state both as “infinite light” and “infinite darkness.” Because both symbols attempt to express a reality beyond the limits of the human mind.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, before creation there was no direction. Because direction requires motion. Motion, however, had not yet begun. There was no above or below. No inside or outside. Even center and periphery had not yet differentiated. Because all potentials existed in the form of a single essence.
The human mind struggles to understand this because within the physical world everything is defined through positions. Yet the Absolute Essence is spaceless. Space appears only when consciousness condenses.
Time was created in the same way.
Time is the measure of motion. If there is no motion, there is no time. Therefore, in the primordial state there is neither past nor future. Everything exists within an eternal “now.” The concept of “azal” in ancient teachings points toward this timelessness.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, it is no coincidence that human beings lose their perception of time during deep mystical experiences. Because as consciousness approaches the center, linear time begins to dissolve. This is why certain moments feel infinite, or long durations collapse into a single instant.
The Absolute Source is also the center of all possibilities. Nothing has yet become distinct, yet everything is possible. This state is explained as “Pre-Conscious Potential.”
The important point to understand here is this: potential is not separate from consciousness. Because consciousness has not yet differentiated itself. In the human world, potential is a possibility that may occur in the future. Yet within the Absolute Essence there is no difference between potential and reality. Because time has not yet formed.
The “cosmic egg” symbol described in ancient esoteric traditions also expresses this condition. From the outside, the egg appears motionless, yet invisible life is concealed within it. The universe was like this in the beginning. It appeared silent, yet all galaxies, all lives, and all souls existed invisibly within it.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first creation is not an explosion. The first creation is an awakening.
When the first vibration was born within silence, Absolute Consciousness began to experience itself as motion. This first motion is called the “First Vibration.”
Ancient teachings gave it names such as:
• Logos,
• AUM,
• the Word,
• Kun,
• the First Light.
This vibration is not a physical sound. Because the physical universe does not yet exist. It is a frequency of consciousness. All sounds within the human world are condensed reflections of it.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the entire universe consists of vibration. Even modern science says that at the essence of matter there are moving energy fields. Esoteric teachings, however, argue that this is only the physical aspect. Because behind energy there is consciousness.
With the First Vibration, unity begins to open into multiplicity. Yet there is still no complete separation here. Multiplicity still vibrates within the center. Like waves forming upon a great ocean… The waves appear separate from one another, yet all are formed from the same water.
Human beings are the same.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, human beings imagine themselves to be separate individuals, yet in essence they are different vibrations of the same source. Separation is an experiential veil. This veil condenses within the physical world. As the soul approaches the center, the sense of unity grows stronger.
For this reason, the aim of all mystical paths is return to the center.
The state of fanāʾ in Sufism, nirvana in Buddhism, unity-consciousness in Hermetic traditions, and esoteric doctrines of ascension all point toward the same truth:
the dissolution of the illusion of separation.
With the birth of the first vibration from Absolute Silence, creation has now begun. Yet this creation is not a completed event. According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, creation is still continuing.
The universe continues to expand,
consciousness continues to transform,
the soul continues to learn.
The rotation of galaxies,
the birth of stars,
the inner search of humanity,
the emergence of love,
the transformation of suffering…
all of these are parts of the same great motion.
Because the universe is not merely a created system.
The universe is
an infinite consciousness
trying to remember itself.
THE FIRST VIBRATION AND COSMIC AWAKENING
Absolute Silence did not remain stagnant forever. For within the depths of silence, an unseen potential was vibrating. This vibration was not yet motion, but the seed of motion existed within it. According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the beginning of creation occurs precisely here: with silence beginning to ripple within itself…
Before the first vibration was born, there was neither matter nor energy. There were no stars and no galaxies. Even light had not yet formed. Yet the essence of all these existed as an invisible state of consciousness. Then the Absolute Essence formed the first resonance within its own depth. And this resonance became the beginning of cosmic creation.
Ancient teachings described this first vibration with different names.
In Hermetic traditions: Logos,
in Indian teachings: AUM,
in Sufism: “Kun,”
in mystical esotericism: the First Word,
and in ancient wisdom: the Cosmic Sound…
All these concepts are symbols of the same truth expressed in different languages.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the essence of creation is “vibration.” For motion can emerge from stillness only through frequency. When silence formed the first vibration within itself, the seed of the universe was planted.
For this reason, sound was regarded as sacred in all ancient traditions.
Because sound is not merely an audible wave. Sound is also the frequency that gives birth to form.
In the human world, sound is invisible, yet its effect becomes visible. A vibration can shape matter. Certain frequencies can transform grains of sand into geometric patterns. Water can change form through vibration. The human soul can be affected by music. Because the essence of the universe is vibration, and consciousness responds to frequencies.
For this reason, the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics accepts the idea of a “spoken universe” at the foundation of creation. The universe was first born as vibration within consciousness, and only afterward gained form.
This is why the command “Be” is important.
The Qur’anic expression “Kun fa-yakūn,” meaning “Be, and it is,” is not merely a metaphorical expression. This statement points toward the vibrational nature of creation. Because the “Be” here is not a physical speech. It is the emergence of a conscious frequency.
The moment the first vibration was born, stagnation began to dissolve. Silence gave birth to motion. Unity opened into multiplicity. And for the first time, an invisible relationship formed between center and periphery.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first vibration is also the first awareness.
For when consciousness begins to move, it becomes capable of observing itself.
Motionless consciousness is infinite within itself, yet without experience. When motion begins, consciousness starts to experience its own infinity in layers. For this reason, creation is also the process through which consciousness comes to know itself.
Why does the human being try to understand themselves?
Because the essence of the universe is doing the same thing.
All quests within the human soul are small reflections of cosmic creation. Human beings think, question, seek meaning, and attempt to discover the unseen truth within themselves. Because the essence of the universe is also the movement of discovering itself.
With the first vibration, the first light was born.
Yet this light is not physical light. Because the physical universe does not yet exist. This is the light of consciousness.
Ancient mystics gave it names such as:
• Nūr al-Awwal (the First Light),
• the Primordial Light,
• the Cosmic Flame,
• the Divine Radiance.
This first light is the essence of all creation. The light of the stars is its condensed form. Intuition within the human soul is one of its small sparks. Love, inspiration, awareness, and the search for truth are all resonances of this first light within consciousness.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, when the first light was born, complete separation had still not yet formed. Everything still existed within the center. Like rings of light forming within a great sun… Yet as these rings multiplied, layering began to emerge.
Thus, the first motion was born.
Motion is not merely movement. Motion is the transformation of consciousness within itself.
Galaxies rotate,
atoms rotate,
planets rotate,
energy fields rotate,
even human thoughts are in constant motion.
Because the essence of creation is spiral motion.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the straight line is an abstraction of the human mind; nature itself moves in spirals. The structure of DNA, the rotation of galaxies, hurricanes, water vortices, and sacred mandalas all carry the same cosmic law.
The spiral is the opening of the center outward.
For this reason, many ancient teachings regarded the spiral as sacred. Because spiral motion represents the transformation of unity into multiplicity.
When the first vibration was born, time also began to form.
Because time is the shadow of motion.
If there is no motion, there is no time.
Within Absolute Silence there was neither past nor future. Everything was a single infinite moment. Yet with the first vibration, change emerged. When change emerged, rhythm was born. With the birth of rhythm, time began to flow.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, time is not absolute. Time depends upon the density of consciousness.
In regions closer to the center, time is more fluid.
As matter condenses, time hardens.
Within the physical universe, it becomes linear.
For this reason, time may disappear during mystical experiences. In deep states of consciousness, human beings may experience minutes as though they were hours, or feel long periods as a single instant. Because consciousness begins to approach beyond physical time.
Ancient sages used the concept of “azal” for this reason. Azal is beginningless timelessness. Yet with creation, time becomes layered and fields of experience emerge.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first vibration is also the first separation.
Yet the separation described here is not an absolute rupture. It is only experiential multiplication.
The waves on the surface of an ocean appear separate from one another, yet all are formed from the same water. Souls are the same. Human beings believe themselves to be separate individuals, yet in their essence they are different vibrations of the same source.
For this reason, “unity consciousness” is important in all mystical teachings.
Because separation produces fear.
Unity gives birth to peace.
As the human being approaches the center, they begin to feel themselves connected to all life. This is why love is regarded as a higher vibration. Because love reduces separation.
Fear, meanwhile, is the forgetting of the center.
When the first vibration was born, consciousness was no longer merely an existing essence, but became a moving flow. Thus, the great ladder of creation began to form.
The symbol of the heavenly ladder described in ancient esoteric teachings appears here. Because consciousness descends downward by condensing into layers, and afterward rises upward once more.
For this reason, creation in the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics is not one-directional.
There is descent.
There is ascent.
The center opens outward.
Then the consciousness at the outermost level attempts to return once more to the center.
This is also the journey of the human soul.
The soul descends into matter,
forgets,
begins to search,
suffers,
loves,
loses,
learns,
awakens…
and eventually begins once again to remember its own essence.
The first vibration is still continuing.
Because the universe is not complete.
Creation has not ended.
The cosmic sound is still resonating.
The turning of galaxies,
the birth of stars,
the longing within the human heart,
the mind seeking truth,
the ecstasy of mystics,
the inspiration of poets…
all of these are continuing echoes of the first vibration.
And when the human being descends into deep silence,
when all thoughts become still,
within the center of their own heart they may sometimes feel that first sound.
Because the vibration at the beginning of the universe
still lives within the depths of the human soul.
THE THRONE (ARSH) AND THE FIRST COSMIC ORDER
When the first vibration was born, the universe was not yet matter. There were no stars and no planets. No heavens and no earth. Everything existed as pure consciousness, pure frequency, and pure light. Yet when the first vibration began to multiply, motion gained order. According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first center of this order is called the “Arsh.”
In ancient teachings, Arsh has often been misunderstood. The human mind tends to reduce symbols into physical forms. For this reason, many imagined Arsh as a great throne standing somewhere in the heavens. Yet in esoteric teaching, Arsh is not a physical object. Arsh is the first center of balance within creation.
For this reason, the expression “Divine Throne” is symbolic.
The throne here represents sovereignty.
Yet this sovereignty is not a coercive domination.
It is the central consciousness of cosmic order.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, Arsh is the first vibration forming a center within itself. For once motion begins, the need for order arises. If motion had no center, creation would disperse chaotically. Therefore, the first vibration generated its own field of attraction. This field of attraction is the birth of the cosmic center.
Ancient mystics sometimes described Arsh as the “First Throne,” sometimes as the “Cosmic Crown,” sometimes as the “Center of Light,” and sometimes as the “First Field of Balance.” Because different traditions attempted to express the same truth through different symbols.
Keter in Kabbalah,
Arsh in Sufism,
the Cosmic Crown in Hermetic traditions,
the Primordial Center in ancient esoteric teachings…
all of these are different names for the same great mystery.
When Arsh emerged, the distinction between center and periphery also began to form. This distinction is not yet physical. It is the first stage of conscious condensation. As the center became a field of intense vibration, the periphery began to expand. Thus, the first spiral motion of creation was formed.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the spiral is the fundamental law of creation.
For the center opens not through straight lines, but through rotational motion.
For this reason, galaxies rotate in spirals.
Hurricanes move in spirals.
DNA carries a spiral structure.
Water vortices form spirals.
Even human energy spreads through rotation.
The spiral is the visible geometry of consciousness.
It is no coincidence that ancient civilizations regarded the spiral as sacred. Because the spiral is not merely an aesthetic shape; it is the fundamental motion of creation.
When the first center formed, three great laws also emerged:
Power,
Kalām,
and Motion.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the entire universe is founded upon this triadic law.
Power is the potential of creation.
Kalām is the knowledge of creation.
Motion is the realization of creation.
These three are not separate from one another. They are three appearances of the same truth.
Without power, becoming is impossible.
Without knowledge, order cannot be established.
Without motion, creation cannot become visible.
The human being also carries this law within themselves.
Will is power.
Thought is Kalām.
Action is motion.
For this reason, the human being is a small universe.
A microcosm.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, there is an invisible resemblance between the greater universe and the human being. Because the human being is a small reflection of the same cosmic order.
Around Arsh, the first circles of light began to form. These circles were not physical light, but layers of consciousness. As the first vibration spread outward from the center, fields of frequency began to multiply.
What ancient teachings describe as:
• the bearers of the Throne,
• the first angels,
• beings of light,
• sacred intellects
are symbolic expressions of these fields of consciousness.
Here, the concept of the “angel” does not refer to a biological being. Angelic consciousness is pure frequency of order.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first angelic beings did not yet possess individual ego. Because the consciousness of separation had not yet formed. They were merely carriers of divine order.
The human mind struggles to understand this because human experience is built upon individuality. Yet within the first fields of consciousness, the sense of “I” had not yet condensed.
For this reason, ancient texts constantly associated angels with light.
Because light here represents the density of consciousness.
The closer the soul is to the center, the brighter its vibration becomes.
As it moves farther from the center, condensation begins.
As condensation increases, consciousness becomes heavier.
Eventually, matter is formed.
Yet in the beginning, everything existed as pure light.
The first circles of light also formed the first cosmic geometries. Because vibration does not spread randomly. Every frequency creates a certain order.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, geometry is not merely a mathematical discipline. Geometry is the visible order of consciousness.
For this reason, sacred geometries are important in all esoteric traditions.
The circle represents unity.
The triangle expresses the creative triadic law.
The spiral signifies motion.
The hexagon represents balance.
Seven-layered structures symbolize cosmic order.
It is no coincidence that ancient temples were constructed according to certain proportions. Because ancient sages believed that the universe was built upon geometric vibrations.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, these cosmic geometries formed during the early stages of creation were later reflected into:
• star systems,
• galaxies,
• energy fields,
• atomic structures.
Modern science today observes that most galaxies possess spiral forms. Esoteric teachings, however, do not see this merely as a physical coincidence. Because spiral motion is the way in which the center opens itself outward.
A galaxy is in reality a vast vortex of consciousness.
Stars are condensed nodes within this vortex.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the universe is not mechanical, but alive.
At the center of every galaxy exists an invisible attraction.
At the center of every atom exists energy.
At the center of every human being exists a center of consciousness.
Because the fundamental law of creation is the relationship between center and periphery.
Without the center, order collapses.
Without the periphery, experience cannot arise.
For this reason, ancient mystics regarded the human heart as a small Arsh.
The heart is not merely a biological organ.
The heart is the center of consciousness.
The human being perceives truth not only through intellect, but through heart-consciousness. Because the resonance of the center is heard most strongly there.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the first motion also established the first law of attraction. Yet this attraction is not merely physical. It is conscious attraction.
Why is the human being drawn toward beauty?
Why do they contemplate infinity?
Why do they seek truth?
Why do they desire love?
Because the center is calling them.
The Sufi teaching, “From Him we came and to Him we shall return,” expresses this great law of return.
Everything emerges from the center.
Then everything attempts to return once again to the center.
This law is seen not only within spiritual realms, but also within the physical universe.
Planets revolve around a center.
Electrons are bound to the nucleus.
Galaxies possess central attraction.
Even the human mind constantly seeks a center of meaning.
Because the essence of motion is rotational return.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, no motion in the universe is completely linear. Because the straight line represents rupture. Yet creation is woven through connections.
Everything is connected through invisible networks of frequency.
For this reason, the first creation is also the first field of unity.
Separation is not yet absolute.
Every consciousness still vibrates within the center.
The “cosmic breath” described in ancient teachings also begins here. As the center expands, creation opens outward. Then it draws inward once more. The expansion and contraction of the universe are interpreted as physical reflections of this great breath.
According to the Doctrine of Self-Dynamics, the universe is not a one-time event.
Creation is a living motion that continuously continues.
Arsh is still vibrating.
The first light is still spreading.
The cosmic sound is still resonating.
Sometimes the human soul can feel this during moments of deep silence.
On the summit of a mountain,
within the star-filled silence of night,
during deep meditations,
in intense moments of love,
within mystical ecstasies…
the human being may briefly approach the vibration of the center.
Because in essence, the human being is part of that first light.
And the purpose of all spiritual journeys
is to gather the scattered consciousness
back into the center once more.
